Steps afoot to improve pass percentage in Agency schools

In an effort to improve the attendance of students and examination results in tribal welfare educational institutions, the school education authorities have initiated an exercise to assess the performance of the Tribal Welfare Ashram Schools, Residential Schools and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) in the Agency areas.

A resource group, comprising 42 subject experts, has already been constituted under the aegis of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Bhadrachalam, to implement the ambitious exercise.

The performance appraisal system envisages awarding grades for all the 90 tribal welfare educational institutions, including 74 ashram schools, eight each KGBVs and residential schools in the tribal sub-plan mandals in the district. The grades will be awarded to the schools based on three parameters – academic performance/results (75 per cent), attendance of both students and teachers (20 per cent) and completion of syllabus (5 per cent).

Evaluation reports

Although, the overall pass percentage in the SSC public examinations in ashram schools marginally improved last year, there is a drop in the pass percentage of KGBVs and residential schools.

The headmasters of a total of 25 schools have submitted the performance evaluation reports in the prescribed format so far, according to N. Rajesh, District Educational Officer (Agency).

Speaking to The Hindu , he has said, “The exercise is aimed at making an in-depth analysis of the performance of each tribal welfare educational institution by the subject experts based on the specified parameters. The main objective of the whole exercise is to improve the pass percentage among the class VI to X students and enhance the overall performance of the tribal welfare schools. It will also help identify the critical gaps if any in the functioning of the schools and bridge them with appropriate interventions.
