The government will come out with a comprehensive water policy to make the best use of available water resources in a time-bound manner, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said on Thursday.

Speaking after reviewing the progress of the Rs. 5,150 crore project at Veligonda in Pedda Dornala of Prakasam district, he announced amid cheers that the first phase of the project, which had suffered delays “owing to the negligence of the previous Congress government” would be completed by September 2016.

After making an aerial survey of Nallamallasagar, Mr. Naidu said: “I will sleep by the side of irrigation projects and see that all ongoing irrigation projects are completed early by holding periodic review meetings and fixing specific target for officials.”

He added that the objective of the new water policy was linking major rivers, including Krishna, Godavari, Thungabhadra, Vamsadhara, Nagavalli and Penna, to divert the surplus water to parched lands in Prakasam district and the Rayalaseema region. “It is unfortunate that the Opposition YSRC is misleading people of Godavari districts by speaking against the Pattiseema project, which will be completed at any cost to ensure water for Rayalaseema,” he added.
