Y. Srilakshmi, suspended IAS officer, was granted interim bail till January 20 by the special court for CBI cases here on Monday to enable her to undergo surgery or pursue any other alternative medical treatment for her disc dislocation.
She has been in jail since January 6 this year after the High Court struck down an earlier bail granted by this court following her arrest in November.
Ms. Srilakshmi was directed to execute a bond for Rs.50,000 with two sureties of like sum, surrender her passport and not leave the city nor contact witnesses in the illegal mining case against former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy. She should surrender in the court on January 21.
By another order, the same court gave Janardhan Reddy’s personal assistant Mehfuz Ali Khan, in police custody, to the CBI for interrogation till October 16. He was brought here from Bangalore central prison on prisoner’s transit warrant on Friday.
In the case of Srilakshmi, the court was of the view that an interim bail for a reasonable period to attend to her medical needs was in the interest of justice though there was no considerable change in the status of the case against Janardhan Reddy since the dismissal of her last bail application on August 13. Her request for full-fledged bail could not be considered at this stage even on medical grounds.
When the arguments on police custody of Khan were heard earlier, the prosecution said the former was an absconder ever since the FIR against Janardhan Reddy was registered.
The CBI took steps to trace him by issuing lookout notices, but he suddenly surrendered in a court in Bangalore on March 5.
