Srikakulam streets wear a deserted look

RTC buses witness a huge drop in occupancy ratio; AC cinema theatres jampacked

April 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - SRIKAKULAM:

Many streets in Srikakulam district wore a deserted look on Monday with the unprecedented summer heat in the current season. Although it was the first working day in the week, people feared to come out from homes. Already, three persons died due to sunstroke in the last week with mercury crossing 36° Celsius. Traffic was thin on important junctions like Ramalaxmana, 7-Roads and Day and Night. RTC witnessed a huge drop in occupancy ratio as majority of passengers postponed their travel plans. Many buses on important routes like Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam were operated with 20 per cent occupancy ratio. The OR is slightly better in Indra AC bus services.

AC cinema theatres were jampacked both for morning and afternoon shows. Srikakulam Collector P. Lakshmi Narasimham conducted a high-level meeting with officials of the Medical and Health Department, Revenue and District Water Management Agency. He ordered the Health Department officials to furnish details of sunstroke victims to the revenue officials so that bereaved families would receive help.

The Collector also directed the DWAMA officials to change the timings of NREGA workers. He asked officials to provide drinking water to those coming to submit petitions in the grievance cell.
