Swachh Rajamahendravaram Initiative (SRI) was launched here on Saturday by city MLA Akula Satyanarayana and Municipal Commissioner V. Vijayaramaraju to keep the city clean and disease-free. Both of them started a machine which crushes tender coconuts, large size e-waste and other hard material.
Speaking on this occasion, the MLA said that prevalence of vector-borne diseases was high in Rajamahendravaram as people were used to throwing plastic waste in drains like Nalla Channel.
He said that the SRI is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat programme and under this programme segregation of waste starts at source.
They are taking up the programme with dry waste like plastic, bottles, broken toys, old tickets, used covers, aluminium waste, used paper plates, waste glasses, used tetra packs and other waste. “Every household should put this dry waste in a cloth bag supplied by us and more than 45 volunteers will collect the same with the support of municipal sanitary staff from apartments and houses. For every kilogram of waste, the SRI trust will pay Rs.3 to the house owners who segregate and give the dry waste,” the MLA said.
The Municipal Commissioner said that the initiative would give a new dimension to the ongoing Swachh Bharat campaign in Rajamahendravaram and the civic body was ready to extend all support.
The MLA announced that the Andhra Kesari Yuvajana Samithi has offered Rs.10,000 to SRI fund. The Ramdas Paper Boards has announced Rs. 20,000 and BEST promised Rs. 25,000 to the fund.
