Rosaiah holds meeting with Chief Secretary and other senior officials

In a development that should culminate in fruition of the Andhra Pradesh government's effort, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has assured the State that national status will be accorded to the Polavaram project across the Godavari as part of Jalayagnam programme.

She gave this assurance in a communication addressed to Chief Minister K. Rosaiah on Friday in response to his repeated requests seeking the status of a national project for Polavaram.

Referring to his plea, Ms. Gandhi said she had asked her office to follow up the matter and complimented Mr. Rosaiah for his initiative in securing clearances for various projects, particularly Polavaram.

Ms. Gandhi expressed happiness that the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had already granted the clearances to the project.

Modify Polavaram dam into barrages project to transfer Godavari water into Krishna River basin with consent of Courts, Orissa and Chhattisgarh.
Mr.Rahul Gandhi, the dynamic M.P. must take the initiative to educate the members of Parliament from Andhra Pradesh about the environmental backlashes of the Dam and the benefits of the barrages for making possible the trasfer of Godavari water into water-deficit Krishna basin to avoid farmers'suicides due to water shortage for agriculture particularly when the upper states are diverting Krishna waters from the share allocated to Andhra Pradesh

Polavaram dam project has been originally conceived in 1940s to divert Godavari water to Visakhapatnam on the North and Prakasam District of Andhra Pradesh on the South of AP STate and that time the peak flood flow in Godavari was estimated at 21 lakh cusecs which increases 36 lakh cusecs in 1986 and the same was revised to 50 lakh cusecs by the Central Water Commission while its sister organisation the National Institute of Hydrology placed it at 60 lakh cusecs while preparing the dam break analysis report at the request of the AP Government in 1999. Today the peak flood is estimated in Godavari at 90 lakh cusecs based upon the peak flood values obtained in Krishna in October 2009 and the peak flood used for the design of Sardar Sarovar project which was taken as one cubic meter per second per sq.km of catchment area. According to international standards also the Probable Maximum Flood in Godavari is under estimated and according to Dr.K.L.Rao, former Union Ministers warning of April, 1983 the Polavaram dam design is defective and it will not work. Hence this killer dam when burst due to peak floods will kill 50 lakhs of people in East and West Godavari districts resulting loss of life and properties estimated at one lakh crores of rupees and this economic burden will be imposed over the shoulders of the children and Grand children of not only Mrs.Sonia Gandhi but also over all the innocent citizens of this country who have never asked for the promotion this killer dam which would have been rejected by a nationalist, patriotic Prime Minister like Mrs.Indira Gandhi who got cancelled projects like the Silent Valley Hydro-electric porject in Keral and the lime stone quarying project in Dehradun. As one who inherited the spirit of Mrs.Indira Gandhi it is a duty of Sri.Rahul Gandhi to get this killer Polavaram dam modified into a barrages project with the support of all the members of Parliament who need to be educated by Mr.Rahul Gandhi as a young leader of his party which is carrying on agitations in Orissa to make the project least hazardous and more beneficial for the people of the nation.

Polavaram malti irrigation project proposed by Andhra Govt approved by Govt of India is good but the duty and fact finding matters should be considered Both the govt of state and center cannot ignore objection raised by Odisa.25 villages of Malkangiri a Naxal effected dist of odisa are most likely to be submerged under dam water.Due to its 150ft high any damage or failure of dam will wash away tribal villages of odisa. The most important is to ensure 100% technical sound for the people likely to be effected.Concern of ODISA Govt should be obtained.Rehabitasion and relief are also should be considered. The way the Govt of India approved and accept as National project and finance is deplorable .It hurts 40 million people of odisa. Even the congress MP and MLA of the state are opposing openly. It is high time now both Andhra state and Central Govt together call for a joint meeting with Odisa and Jharkhanda before commencement .Ramesh nayak Retd Engineer on tour to USA and Canada
