Congress president Sonia Gandhi broke the security cordon and reached out to the people in general and womenfolk in particular, shaking hands with them amid cheers.
While Congress leaders from the region were addressing the huge crowd, they waved to Ms. Gandhi who was seated on the dais. Ms. Gandhi waved back and after the completion of her speech arrived at the front enclosures. People competed to have closer look of the Congress chief, who is called ‘Telangana Thalli’ for her role in the creation of a separate State.
Ms. Gandhi, who was on her maiden visit to Karimnagar town after the A.P. State Reorganisation Bill was passed in Parlia-ment, arrived in an open-top jeep, much to the surprise of the crowd. Congress leaders welcomed their chief by garlanding and felicitating her with shawls and mementos.
Ms. Gandhi also met the party’s candidates from Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Warangal, Adilabad and Nalgonda districts on the dais.
