Socio economic survey of capital region to begin soon

‘Future of 2 lakh farm labourers is at stake’

March 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - GUNTUR:

The State government is conducting a socio-economic survey in all the 29 villages under the Capital Region Development Authority to ascertain the socio economic status of the landless poor, small and marginal farmers and the communities living in the villages.

The survey would pave the way for introduction of skill development programmes, payment of a monthly compensation and other welfare measures to address issues of loss of livelihood, possible migration and displacement. Joint Collector Ch. Sridhar said that the survey would begin soon and the CRDA was finalising parameters of the survey.

According to an estimate, the total population in the capital notified region is 1.52 lakh, out of which there were 42,076 Dalits and 7,370 tribals.

Out of the total extent of 53,720 acres of land, the government had notified 45,525.37 acres, out of which 37,624 acres is patta land. There are 8,000 acres of assigned land, mostly cultivated by dalit farmers.

Dalit Bahujan Front, a frontal organisation fighting for fair compensation to landless dalit labourers, had conducted a survey in the capital notified region.

The survey says that there are 2,356 dalit farmers out of the total number of 22,404 farmers.

Tenant farmers number about 12,000 and there are 2.40 lakh farm labourers belonging to Scheduled Caste community (five labourers an acre).

Land holdings among dalits and tribals also make an interesting study. There are just 1,123 dalit families holding land above five acres, 882 families own 4-5 acres, 1,575 families own 3-4 acres while 5,534 families own 0.5 acre-1 acre. There are 4,444 families owning less than 0.5 acre.

“We demand that the Dalit families be made stakeholders in the construction of the new capital region. We want the state government to adopt following parameters in the survey. Type of land holding, ownership details, legal possession, physical possession, land issues and solutions,” said Korivi Vinay Kumar, Congress SC/ST Cell president and a social activist told The Hindu on Thursday.
