Nagesh, Deputy General Manager (HR) of HPCL and Secretary of Skill Development Institute (SDI), Visakhapatnam, inaugurated Skill Development Centre (SDC) at the Rajamahendravaram Central Prison on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, M. Varaprasad, Superintendent of Central Prison, said that SDI, Vizag to start SDC to impart training to 400 inmates in trades like welding, plumbing and fabrication.
He said that this is part of prisoners’ rehabilitation and reformation programme for their livelihood after their release. It will reduce recidivism in the society, he added. The SDI had entered into a memorandum of understanding with the central prison and SDC was inaugurated on the occasion of the National Skill Development Day on Saturday, Mr. Varaprasad said. He said that inmates would be able to get jobs with the certificates issued by the SDI after their release.
Soft skills
Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Nagesh said that the SDC will promote awareness among the prisoners. The centre imparts soft skills in addition to training in respective trades that the prisoners opted. He said that this centre got approval as the special project under the Pradhan Mantri Kausal Vikas Yojana by the National Skill Development Corporation.

Dhanunjaya Reddy on Saturday said that the real development of the country was possible only when youngsters would update and improve their skills in their chosen fields. He inaugurated an exhibition and a meeting organised in Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Auditorium in connection with the World Skill Day.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that youngsters should understand technology and improve their skills to achieve their goals. Srikakulam MLA Gunda Lakshmi Devi said that the State government was spending huge amount for the skill development of students. She urged the Collector to expand the activities of the AP Skill Development Corporation in remote areas too.
Srikakulam ZP Chairperson Chowdary Dhanalakshmi said that innovative thinking was needed for every student and asked them to utilise the services of the corporation to improve their opportunities.
