Six militia members of the Galikonda and Korukonda Area Committees of the banned CPI (Maoist) surrendered before SP (Visakha Rural) Rahul Dev Sharma here on Sunday.

They were identified as Korra Rajababu (42), Vanthala Sethu, alias Tilusu (25), Vanthala Ramakrishna (35), and Vanthala Ravi (30), all carrying a cash reward of ₹1 lakh on their head, Korra Mallana (30) and Pangi Bhaskar Rao (35).

All are native of G.K. Veedhi and Chintapalle mandals in Visakhapatnam Agency.

Mr. Rahul said the militia members were involved in several offences such as exchange of fire with security personnel, killing of Sagina Venkata Ramana, damaging APFDC’s coffee godowns, and occupying coffee plantations .

The SP said the six militia members surrendered because they were fed up with the ideology of the Maoist party and decided to lead a normal life.

“The number of surrenders has been increasing in the Visakhapatnam region and this clearly indicates that the Maoists are losing their tribal base. This will help in the development of the remote Agency areas,” Mr. Rahul added.

All cases against the surrendered militia members would be dropped as per the government’s directive and they would be provided benefits to lead a normal life.
