Andhra Pradesh Sistakarnam Association on Monday urged the Union government and National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) to provide other backward caste (OBC) status for the community which was neglected in government jobs and educational opportunities.

Association president P. Uma Maheswara Rao said that the community had decided to take up ‘Chalo Delhi’ programme very soon to step up pressure on the Centre to get OBC status for the community. He expressed concern over the denial of opportunities in Central government jobs, with inordinate delay in accepting the demand which was mooted two decades ago.

Association leaders B.Dayanidhi, S.Krishna, AVJ Patnaik, R.Narendra and others who met in Srikakulam chalked out an action plan to garner the support of public representatives also for OBC status.

According to them, over 90 percent of the persons in the community come under below poverty line.

They are not able to provide proper education to their children with the lack of financial strength.

Many of Sistakarnams are working as agricultural labourers, fishermen, clerks, domestic servants.

Majority of them have been forced to migrate to other places with the lack of livelihood in their native places such as Srikakulam and Vizianagaram.
