A steady increase in the floating population from surrounding villages and lack of developmental activities are giving rise to a number of problems in Nellore city.
The arterial roads and lanes in shopping areas are literally choking with crowds arriving for various needs. The famous Grand Trunk Road is still continuing as the main business area with textiles, electronics, home appliances shops and hotels located here.
Traffic management in these areas has become a major challenge for the police authorities as well. The problem is severe from the RTC bus stand to AC Centre and Kanakamahal Centre.
Though the city has witnessed the population touching 5 lakh, there is no corresponding growth in shopping areas and outlying colonies.
The city has started expanding towards the Minibypass Road and the National Highway with many colonies coming up there. Balajinagar, Children’s Park, Vedayapalem, Ayyappa Gudi Centre and other localities have witnessed some progress but they have not yet developed into vibrant shopping areas.
For most business, shopping and banking activities, the people are thronging the Gandhibomma on GT area and its surroundings. The lanes and bylanes in Pogathota, AC Centre and Brundavanam are always choc-a-bloc between 9 a.m and 8 p.m. Autorickshaws virtually take over GT road and surrounding lanes during peak hours. The influx of shoppers also create parking problems and most of these people park their vehicle haphazardly, causing inconvenience to the public. The authorities are not allowing vehicles to be parked on the sides of the road. There is need for more parking lots in the busy shopping areas .
