Former Minister P. Shankar Rao on Friday criticised the action of the police in registering a case against S. Nagesh Kumar, Resident Editor (Andhra Pradesh) of The Hindu .
Talking to reporters at the Assembly media point on Friday, Dr. Rao said it was unfortunate and highly objectionable to file case against the senior journalist of the reputed newspaper, which had merely reported the visit of the DGP V. Dinesh Reddy to the godman, Habib Mustafa Idrus Baba, in Old City recently.
He lamented that the head of police force had resorted to similar actions against the elected representatives and was now adopting the same tactics to silence the media. He said case against The Hindu , which has chequered history in Indian journalism, was uncalled for.
Don’t extend DGP’s tenure
He demanded that the case be withdrawn unconditionally. He asked the Centre not consider the plea of the DGP seeking extension of his service.
The Secunderabad Cantonment legislator wanted the Chief Minister to intervene and protect the interests of journalists in general and The Hindu in particular.
