Sex determination tests rampant in Adilabad

February 08, 2014 02:21 pm | Updated November 17, 2021 05:55 am IST - ADILABAD:

The Pre Conception Pre Natal Determination Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PCPNDT), continues to be carried out clandestinely in Adilabad, this time owing to official apathy.

Even as one month has lapsed since the raids carried out by the State Appropriate Authority on scanning centres in the district, local authorities have failed to lodge complaints against erring scanning centres.

On January 4, the State Appropriate Authority Sudhakar Babu raided five scanning centres at Mancherial and seized one.

Similarly, another raid at Nirmal and Bhainsa found all the eight scanning centres in Nirmal violating the PCPNDT Act.

A scanning machine was also seized from one of the centres.

“As per the Act, a complaint against those centres where seizures were made should have been filed within 24 hours. Steps should have been initiated against the centres which have not replied to show cause notices served on them following the raids,” said an official while talking about the provisions of the Act that are meant to act as a deterrent as well.

“The raids came soon after a doctor at Mancherial was convicted, which should have spurred the local authorities to act. They should have acted swiftly after the State Appropriate Authority conducted the raid,” the official pointed out.
