Heavy rain that lashed the district in the last four days has severely affected normal life in Guntur district. Many streams and rivulets are overflowing, cutting road ways to some hundreds of villages on Friday.
Kondaveedu vaagu which was in spate for the last two days was flowing on the bridge at Yendroye village, cutting transportation between Guntur and Amaravathi mandal. Crops in some thousands of acres were inundated in flood water in Lemalle, Yendroye, Munagodu and other villages due to the flash floods.
District Revenue Officer (DRO) K. Naga Babu said that several villages were submerged in rain water in Pedda Nandipadu, Kakumanu, Sattenapalli, Zillelamudi, Yedlapadu, Amaravathi and other mandals in district as Nakka Vaagu, Lam Vaagu, Pedda Vaagu, Yeddu Vaagu, Yerna Devi and other canals were overflowing.
Trains diverted
The South Central Railway (SCR) cancelled a few trains and diverted some trains between Guntur and Secunderabad, as rain water was flowing on the tracks causing slippage of soil between Nalgonda-Tipparthi stations. Trains passing through Bibinagar-Nadikudi section were diverted on the mainline via. New Guntur-Vijayawada- Kazipet and Secunderabad. The Janmabhoomi Express to Secunderabad was partially cancelled at Nadikudi on Friday. The same train between Secunderabad and Guntur was partially cancelled on October 26.
Delta passenger train from Repalle on Friday night has been cancelled. Express trains – Sabari, Narayanadri, Narsapur, Visakha and Chennai – will run on the diverted route (i.e. via Vijayawada-Kazipet), said the SCR officials.
Collector S. Suresh Kumar, who was monitoring the flood situation, appealed to the public to drink boiled and filtered water to prevent diseases.
Buses diverted
APSRTC Guntur Regional Manager P.V. Rama Rao said that bus services were not restored on 29 routes as canals were overflowing on the main roads. The officials diverted the services as the water had not receded and roads were badly damaged in some areas, he said.
