Seven killed in accidents

Tragedy strikes two families returning to their respective hometowns from Tirumala

: Tragedy struck two families as six pilgrims returning from Tirumala were killed and 11 others injured in two different accidents on the Chennai-Kolkata highway in Prakasam district in the wee hours of Thursday.

In the first incident, the family of a retired Electricity Department employee Macherla Veeraswamy was returning to Guntur after performing head tonsuring ceremony for his grandchildren at Tirumala when the accident occurred. Veeraswamy's granddaughters Nityasri (1) and Chinni Krishna Vasavi(3) and grandsons Chinni Krishna Manohar (5) and Srikrishna(3) died on the spot as also the car driver Nagaraju(30), the DSP said. Veeraswamy's wife Mangamma (55) succumbed to injuries while being shifted to a hospital in Guntur. In the second incident, 56-year-old Rama Devi from Malkangiri in Odisha was killed and seven of her relatives from Bhadrachalam were injured when their car hit a lorry at Renengivaram.
