‘Sangma came unannounced’

June 26, 2012 09:57 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:06 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Disputing Mr. Sangma’s claim that he went to the jail after prior intimation, the jail authorities have said he came unannounced straight from the airport.

A jail official, who refused to be named, said Mr. Sangma neither fixed an appointment with Jagan nor informed them that he would be coming to meet the MP. He suddenly arrived at 8.30 a.m. when most of them had left home after completing their rounds of the jail.

The official explained that they were always on jail premises between 5 a.m. and 5.30 a.m. to look after unlocking of barracks and preparation of tea and breakfast for inmates. They left home by 8 a.m. and returned at 9.30 a.m. when the interviews of visitors with inmates were arranged. Mr. Sangma reached during this interval when they were out and insisted on meeting Jagan.

Nonetheless, he was asked to call them up at 11.30 a.m. because Jagan had to be produced before court through video linkage from jail after 10.30 a.m. By then, the consent or otherwise of Jagan would also be obtained. They also had to consider the jail manual which barred discussion on political matters within the premises.
