The Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) has commissioned the Electro Magnetic Interference/Compatibility Modelling and Computational Lab in the city.
Even as the authorities are working hard to complete the work on the first phase of India’s first Centre for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (CE3) – useful for defence, aviation, electronics, and other vital sectors, at Gambheeram, SAMEER, an autonomous R&D institute under the Department of Electronics and Information Technology in the Ministry of Communications and IT, started earning by offering consultancy services. “Though we are confident of completing the work on the first phase by this year-end, we have already made a small beginning by commissioning the EMI 3D modelling service by our high-end computers as part of our EMI Computational Lab,” SAMEER-Vizag Director B. Subba Rao told The Hindu on Thursday. Electromagnetic pulse was high amplitude, short timed, and broadband pulse of energy with potential to cause devastation on unprotected electronic equipment and systems used by all the sectors, he said. Three big equipment — Pulsed Current Injection (PCI), ultra wide band (UWB) system, and radiated susceptibility (RS105) — have already been procured. They will be synchronised soon. After trial run, the first phase will be commissioned formally.
Radiated exposure
Dr. Subba Rao said RS105, a huge facility, was available only in a few places across the world. It would address the risk of radiated exposure. It would be of immense use for large ships, submarines, and aircraft, and as well as multiple ground applications. He said the facility would check the immunity of electronic products, systems and sub-systems for mainly the defence sector. Three dimensional model services, which include EMC modelling/simulation, design consultancy and production compliance, were being offered to prospective clients.
Internship
SAMEER centre in the city, even during the construction stage, offered internship to 16 M.Tech students for a year at AU Engineering College, JNTU-Vizianagaram, and Gayatri Engineering College, Visakhapatnam. It is also offering apprenticeships by paying ₹10,000 a month.
