An APSRTC bus, parked on the premises of Edukondala Bus Stand in Tirupati Central Bus Station, was gutted in the early hours of Thursday.

According to sources, the bus (Tirumala Ghat Eligible) was parked for the night and was supposed to resume services to Tirumala on Friday, when it caught fire. Though the passers-by alerted officials, who in turn called up the fire department, the bus was completely destroyed by the time the fire department personnel reached the spot.

Officials, who initially suspected the cause of fire to a battery short circuit, said the fire spread in the interiors before any signs could be known to the passers-by. Speaking to The Hindu , RTC Regional Manager V. Nagasivudu said the main reason for the fire was yet to be ascertained.

“We have filed a complaint with the Tirupati East police station about the incident and investigation is on. The loss of property is estimated at Rs. 6 lakh,” he added.
