Rural Development Minister D. Manikya Varaprasada Rao has announced that a sum of Rs.1,500 crore would be spent under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to create or improve infrastructure facilities in Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes colonies in the State.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday after discussions with Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, he described the decision by the latter to extend free power supply to SC households consuming less than 50 units a month, as “historic”.

The Congress proved itself again that it was the real saviour of the Dalits, he said. “Dalits always rallied behind Congress because of this fact”, he added.
