The suspicious death of a prisoner turned into a controversy at the Central prison here on Thursday.

Somla Naik of Gundlasingaram village in Hanamkonda mandal was arrested by the Excise police on April 16 on charges of selling illicitly distilled liquor. He was remanded to custody on the same day and on Wednesday, he secured bail.

The jail authorities said he was let off around 9.30 a.m. and his wife and relatives came to the prison with his dead body at 11.30 a.m. accusing the authorities of beating him to death. The authorities said he was ailing before he came to the jail and was taken to hospital for treatment. The relatives of deceased brought his body in a auto-rickshaw and staged a demonstration seeking justice.

Police assured the relatives of registering a case.
