Row over TDP MLA’s remarks against Roja

Tempers cool down after Kodela offers to constitute panel. When the house was reconvened, YSRC members demanded an unconditional apology from Mr. Chowdary.

Remarks by TDP legislator G. Buchaiah Chowdary against his YSR Congress counterpart Roja set the AP Legislative Assembly on fire on Monday, resulting in adjournment of the House. The after-effects rocked the Assembly after it had reconvened for passing the AP Capital Region Development Authority Bill, 2014.

The issue began unravelling when YSRC legislator Y. Visweswara Reddy was stopped abruptly during his speech by the Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao citing time lapse. A group of MLAs rushed into the well to protest, as Mr. Chowdary began his address. He then accused Ms. Roja with a reference to her career as film actor, and said she behaved as a “villain” in the House too, by using abusive language. His comments led to an uproar with YSRC legislators protesting loudly, and Ms. Roja insisting that she be allowed to respond.

Even after the House was adjourned, the members stayed put. Members were seen pushing each other from one end to the other, even as some others tried to pacify them.

Outside at the media point, Ms. Roja said she would move a privilege motion against Mr. Chowdary, and warned the ruling party that they were digging their own grave.

When the house was reconvened, YSRC members demanded an unconditional apology from Mr. Chowdary. However, TDP members insisted that the video recording of the whole proceedings should be watched before any decision was taken. The issue subsided only after Dr. Sivaprasada Rao offered to constitute a committee with two members each from the TDP and the YSRC, and one from the BJP which could go through the records and offer its opinion.
