Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Monday briefed Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the devastation caused by the massive floods in the state.

“The Srisailam reservoir across river Krishna received unprecedented inflows of 25.40 lakh cusecs. This river never received such flash inflows in the last hundred years,” he said in a letter to Ms. Gandhi, who conducted an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas of the state.

He said Srisailam Right Bank Canal power houses (770 MW) were inundated and damaged. Electrical installations at several places were also damaged causing total disruption of power supply to hundreds of villages, he said.

The Chief Minister further said that lakhs of people have been evacuated in Vijayawada as the inflow of water into Prakasam barrage is at an unprecedented high level.

The state government has initiated all steps to provide relief to the people and an all-party meeting was held to apprise the leaders of the situation, Mr. Rosaiah said in the letter.
