RO plants to supply safe drinking water to villages

March 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - KAKINADA:

The East Godavari district administration has identified 276 villages where the quality of drinking water is not up to the mark and launched a special drive to ensure safe drinking water supply to those villages through the Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants.

With the help of corporate companies such as Oil India and Coromandel, the Rural Water Supply Department will install the RO plants in selected villages within a fortnight and deliver purified water at the people’s doorsteps.

Reviewing the arrangements with the officials here on Monday, Collector H. Arun Kumar said that the Panchayat Raj Department had to take care of the maintenance of the plants and the village-level committees would focus on the distribution channels, adding that the households would be charged Rs. 2 per 20 litres of drinking water, apart from the delivery charges basing on the local conditions.

He advised the RWS Department to inspect the existing 130 RO plants in the district and undertake repairs, if necessary.

“There should be no dearth of drinking water in the district during summer and people must be aware of the importance of consuming purified drinking water,” he said.
