When some surgeries fail, it not only causes irritation to the patients, but aggravates pain and worsens the situation. It is when revision surgery brings solace.

It was a painful experience for 68-year old Savitramma of Thondavada village in Tirupati rural to see the knee replacement surgery undergone at Hyderabad fail in two months. The knee developed infection and witnessed pus formation that made walking difficult for her.

“By taking up antibiotic impregnated articular space to contain infection, we also ensured that the patient folded her knee freely. The joint replacement surgery was performed in the second stage,” said knee replacement specialist M. Rajesh, who performed the surgery at Sri Chakra hospital.

Dr. Rajesh, who has a fellowship in revision replacement surgery from Canada, explained to the media on Friday that infection could be avoided by performing surgery in theatres having laminar airflow facility.
