Activists of students’ organisations affiliated to Left parties staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday demanding immediate steps to regulate the functioning of corporate colleges and put an end to student suicides.
Activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI), All-India Students’ Federation (AISF) and Progressive Democratic Students’ Union (PDSU) raised slogans against the corporate colleges which continues to flout norms by holding classes for 12 hours a day.
The State government did nothing to enforce the circular prohibiting conduct of classes on Sundays and other holidays and restrict the working hours between 9.45 a.m. and 4.45 p.m., alleged SFI district president Ch.Sudhakar.
AISF district convenor P. Kumari urged the government to make public the reports of the Neerada Reddy and Chakrapani committees and take steps to make education in corporate colleges stress-free.
The Intermediate Board should immediately hold a joint meeting with the managements of corporate colleges, parents and students organisations and form a supervisory committee in each and every college to reach out to students in distress, said PDSU district secretary M. Dhanraj.
