Is Union Minister Daggubati Purandeswari being seen as trouble-shooter for the Congress, who can pacify the dominant Kamma community in the Krishna Delta region and wean them away from the Samaikyandhra agitation?
Her visit to the city, was dubbed a ‘private’ one, but looked more like a mission to bring together people from the community and to convince a few influential people like industrialists to start thinking about what the region needed post-division. As a leader with strong moorings in the Seemandhra region, the Congress high command will be looking to her to create a foundation to rebuild the party in Seemandhra after the party’s image was dented in the past two months.
Caste will play a very big role in the coming elections as the division of the State will bring about a sea change in the overall caste composition of the electorate and will therefore change the stand of major political parties also.
Whatever may have been her excuse to come to the city on Wednesday, speculation is that she came to give an important message to leaders of the powerful Kamma community in Krishna district. The caste composition of the newly-formed State would favour the sections of society that had not been able to capture political power like the BCs and Kapus. It is under this scenario that Ms. Purandeswari’s trip to the city assumes significance.
