In continuation of the recent district-wide protests against the government's liquor policy and establishment of liquor stores, the women folk of Hindupur town on Sunday staged a protest opposite the house of Nandamuri Balakrishna.
Women of ward No. 2 of the Hindupur municipality, belonging to the Chowdeswari Colony area, along with the ward councillor staged a protest on the Hindupur – Penukonda road in the morning blocking the traffic for several kilometres at a stretch demanding that a liquor store being opened in their colony be removed immediately.
When the police were pressed into service to vacate the women in protest, the women raised objection to the fact that the liquor store which was recently opened was very close to habitations and in fact, even closer to the TDP legislator and actor Nandamuri Balakrishna’s residence in Hindupur.
Relocation of protest
With neither the police nor the officials able to give them any immediate solution to the problem, the group of women relocated their protest to the road in front of Mr. Balakrishna’s house raising objection to him allowing a liquor shop amidst habitations in spite of being the people’s representative.
With the sloganeering and the protest leading to a complete blockade of the road, Mr. Krishnamurthy, personal assistant of Mr. Balakrishna, and other leaders of the TDP present there assured the protesting public that the problem would be resolved and the liquor shop shifted from the locality as soon as possible.
