‘Prepare well before opting for a college’

Don’t choose the colleges and courses that you are least interested in while giving options during the web counselling.

Last year, hundreds of students got admission in the colleges and courses they were least interested in. The reason was that students gave those particular options as their friends had chosen the same or someone has misguided them with offers such as free bus service. “Getting influenced by friends or private agents is quite common but students should choose their preference of college and course based on their needs,” says Dr. Raghunath, camp officer, Engineering Counselling.

Once the colleges are allotted students have to be there for the next four years. So they have to be extremely cautious while choosing the options. So how does one starts preparation for web counselling and what are the key factors while choosing a particular college or course?

Check the college profile first since institutions play a key role in shaping a student. Distance from home, availability of hostel, family background and financial ability to move out of hometown are other factors to be considered. Discuss with family and seniors and decide on the course. Based on these parameters make a list of colleges, courses and the combination of both, and write down the options on a piece of paper before feeding onto computer.

Different fee structure

Whatever may be the rank, one can choose the combination of best colleges and courses as their first options. Officials also advise the same as the allotment is done not just based on student’s rank but also how rankers above them choose their options. “So never hesitate to give the best colleges as your first options. Once you exhaust with the best ones, you can include the ones that are likely to get you a seat based on your rank and reservation category,” says Dr. Raghunath.

Students might encounter a new problem this year while choosing the options as there is bound to be a different fee structure in about 130 colleges that got a favourable order from the Supreme Court. Unlike previous years students have to keep the fee aspect in mind while opting for a particular college where the fee is likely to be higher. Rankers below 50,000 will face this problem as they are the prospective candidates for such colleges. So financial capacity of parents will also play a key role this year as the government has decided to reimburse only Rs.35,000 irrespective of the fee decided.

Allotment of seats will be done based on Rank, Local Area, Gender, Reservation Category and the options given by the students.
