B. Prasada Rao, the in-charge Director General of Police, has said he will see to it that there were no instances of friction between the police and the media as in the recent past during his term of office.
Addressing a press conference after taking full additional charge of the post of DGP here on Monday, Mr. Rao said both the police and the media should render good service to public. However, it was unfortunate that there was some friction between the two.
The police will review individual cases and take appropriate action, he said, in response to a question about harassment of media personnel by police towards the end of the tenure of his predecessor, V. Dinesh Reddy. Mr. Prasada Rao was given full additional charge of the post of DGP as he is yet to be empanelled for the post. The government will forward a list of six officers, including Mr. Rao, to the UPSC in line with the Supreme Court’s directions. The UPSC will shortlist three names and send them back to the State government which will select the candidate of its choice in consultation with the commission. As the process will take a few days, the government issued an order on Monday stating that Mr. Rao will hold additional charge of head of police force until further orders. He also said he will take up police reforms with the government. There was adequate police force in the State, but the problem was with Hyderabad where the right candidates were not available for jobs due to Presidential Order in force, he added. Earlier, Mr. Dinesh Reddy was given a farewell parade at the central police lines at Amberpet.
