Power supply situation is improving in the cyclone-ravaged city. On Thursday, electricity supply was restored to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and Airport and efforts are on to restore power to the IT special economic zone at Rushikonda and the units in the AP SEZ at Parawada and the units in Pharma City, said State Energy Secretary Ajay Jain.

Reviewing the situation he said by Thursday night 2.5 lakh domestic connection will be given power. “We are trying to cover the entire city by Saturday, as per the Chief Minister’s instruction, but we may fall short marginally. However, we are confident of covering 80 to 90 per cent,” said Mr. Jain.

So far power has been restored to three 220Kv sub-stations, twelve132kv, 32kv (51) and 107 1kv (112) feeders in Visakhapatnam. Power has been restored in certain areas such as VSEZ, Gajuwaka, Pedagantyada, Narava, NSTL, Simhachalam, KGH, Port area, outer harbour, Town Kotha Road, HB Colony, Rajendranagar and Nakkavanipalem.

He also said efforts were on to restore power in rural and Agency areas of the district. “It will take a much longer time and so far we could restore power only to Araku sub-station,” he said.

About 9,000 men are at work and another 2,500 from other states will join the team by Friday morning. Material is being sourced from Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar. And efforts are being made to supply power to Vizianagaram and Srikakulam town. At Srikakulam all the 33/11 kv sub-stations have been rectified, he said.
