Minister for IT Ponnala Lakshmaiah and Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar had a miraculous escape when the elevator in which they were moving collapsed after the cable snapped from the third floor and hit the ground floor, here on Friday.

The freak mishap occurred when they were participating in the inauguration of Pullela hospital here.

Ramagundam legislator S. Satyanarayana and Vemulawada Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Devasthanam chairman Bomma Venkateshwar sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to a nearby private hospital for treatment.

Initially, Mr. Ponnam Prabhakar said he was comfortable and nothing had happened to him. However, in the evening, he started complaining of pain and he too was taken to the hospital for treatment.

In all, eight persons, including Karimnagar MLC Naradasu Laxman Rao, senior doctor V. Bhoom Reddy and others were moving in the elevator against the capacity of 12 persons.

Eye-witness accounts indicated that the elevator collapsed suddenly from third floor with high speed and hit the ground. The springs kept underneath the elevator were damaged in the mishap.

Incidentally, Mr. Lakshmaiah participated in his birthday celebrations by cutting the cake at the residence of Mr. Venkateshwar before proceeding to the inaugural function.
