Labour Minister Danam Nagender has said that the State government will soon announce a policy for the welfare of workers in unorganised sector.
It will cover rag-pickers, street vendors, domestic workers and also home guards, the Minister said at the May Day celebrations organised by the government here on Wednesday.
He said that the government contemplated introducing pension for aged construction workers, physically disabled workers and families of workers who died. Incentives would be given to workers who followed family planning and rest rooms would be constructed at bases where workers gathered.

There was also a proposal of doubling the financial assistance under welfare schemes for the workers. The offices of the Labour Commissioner and Welfare Board for construction workers were proposed to be accommodated on common premises at Azamabad welfare centre for easy interface, he added.
Mr. Nagender said it was decided to enrol 18 lakh construction workers for welfare programmes this year. They would be extended an assistance of Rs. 400 crore. The government had recently set up a social security board for the three crore workers of unorganised sector to extend to them Centrally sponsored health insurance schemes, he added.
CPI leader G. Mallesh expressed displeasure that Chief Minister could not attend this meeting.
The Minister presented ‘Shramashakti’ awards to 61 individuals and best management awards to 15 companies.
