Police resorted to lathi-charge at the District Collectorate here on Wednesday to disperse a violent mob of students who were agitating for scholarships, fee reimbursement and student union elections.
The students, led by AISF and PDSU activists, gathered in huge numbers at the Collectorate as part of a Statewide agitation. Later, they tried to create trouble by barging into the Collectorate premises. Police scuffled with the protesters to prevent them from entering the premises, and as the physical barrier failed to control the students, they resorted to caning.
Later, student leaders said that in the absence of clarity over fee reimbursement, they were doubtful about pursuing higher studies. They said the government was dragging its feet when it came to release of scholarships and fees.
Also, the students demanded elections to student unions, saying it was a conspiracy by the government not to promote leadership qualities among those from weaker sections. Also, the government is scared of the student force, which might counter the misdeeds of the ruling party, they alleged.
