Chinese translator and mediator to red sanders smuggling network Lin Dong Fu (39), currently in 10-day police custody after being nabbed in Bengaluru two weeks ago, has turned a hard nut to crack for the investigators.

During an interrogation process at District Police Training Centre here on Wednesday. Dong Fu reportedly turned hostile and grabbing his i-phone from the cops, he smashed it to pieces in a bid to destroy evidence regarding network contacts, red sanders dumps, and financial transactions.

An armed tfForce party from Chittoor nabbed Dong at a hideout in Bengaluru on April 8, seizing foreign currency of 52 countries. As per police investigation, Dong had facilitated logistic support to the smuggling network to clandestinely export over 240 tonnes of logs, worth over Rs. 500 crore in international market. When he was arrested, the police also seized his phone.

Speaking to The Hindu , Additional SP (Red Sanders Operations) Yelisala Ratna said the translator’s mobile contained vital information about his contacts, text and audio messages, and video clips of key persons, logs for disposal and financial transactions. As part of the interrogation, the policemen were questioning Dong regarding information in the mobile. All of a sudden, the Chinese national pushed away the two cops, who were holding him, and grabbed the mobile from the investigating officer. He smashed the instrument to pieces by banging it to ground, and stamping the broken pieces with his feet. This resulted in a temporary halt to the probe.

The official said that though the video and audio material was safe, the text messages had disappeared.
