Tragedy struck a family of Madhavaram-I village in Siddhavatam mandal which went on a pilgrimage to Mangalore, when a 60-year-old woman, Meharunnisa, drowned in the sea and a 14-year-old boy, Mushtaq, got washed away from the Mangalore beach in Karnataka on Friday.

Meharunnisa, her five daughters, sons-in-law and a grandson with a family of an acquaintance, Shamsher, arrived at Mangalore in three cars and offered prayers at a dargah at Ullala. Later, they went to the beach at Mogaveerpattana where five persons ventured into the sea, according to the information reaching here. They were tossed up by a monster wave when other family members cried for help.

Aron, an Australian engineer studying the effect of tidal waves, jumped into the sea and rescued Ghousunnisa (30), Munni (20), Shakeela Banu (34) and Meharunnisa. They were rushed to Netaji Hospital in Bangalore, but Meharunnisa breathed her last soon after reaching the hospital.

The Karnataka Minister for Family Welfare U.T. Khader visited the hospital and consoled the bereaved family members. A search has been launched to trace Mushtaq. A pall of gloom pervaded Madhavaram-I village on getting to know about the tragic incident.
