The State government has geared up to extend Pelli kanuka (marriage gift) scheme to the beneficiaries from January 1, 2018, according to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

He also said a pension of ₹1,000 per month would be given to transgenders very soon. He, however, did not elaborate on the scheme.

New trend

Intervening in a short discussion on welfare schemes in the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Naidu said the government would pay 20% of Pelli kanuka before marriage and 80% on the day of marriage. A new trend was setting in society.

People were paying dowry to the bride instead of demanding it from the bride’s parents. Indeed, it was a good trend that bridegrooms were ready to do so, he said.

Welfare agenda

The poor were agitated that education, health and marriage had increased their budgets. The government was taking measures to improve standards in government schools.

The government was also paying ₹2 lakh compensation for natural death under the Chandranna Bima.

Also, portability had been ensured with regard to the distribution of pensions and ration, he said.

“The government would go for elections only after completing the housing schemes.”

The government would launch Anna canteens in 2018. It provided 29 lakh gas connections with a cost of ₹474 crore.

The houses constructed without permissions were also being regularised and Open Defecation Free (ODF) was achieved, he said.
