Students should widen their horizons so that they will be able to land a good number of opportunities, said K.N. Satyanarayana, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Tirupati, (IIT-T), here on Sunday.

Addressing students after formally inaugurating The Hindu Education Fair, organised by India's national newspaper under its flagship education brand ‘EDGE’, Dr. Satyanarayana called it time for students to improve their overall personality, mould their character, increase the depth of their knowledge and infuse passion into their career pursuit.

He made it very clear that passion should determine the choice of their colleges or courses. “The decision to take up a stream of education or join a college should be based on your passion and not the suggestions from your friends and relatives,” he quipped. He also saw a rise in the number of takers for sciences and humanities. “Most of you choose the field that offers the highest pay package, but career means much more than salary,” he remarked, adding a word of caution that ‘passionless choice’ of educational stream could unduly influence their career spanning three to four decades.

Industry churning

At every available opportunity, the students, who had gathered in large numbers for the fair, eagerly mobbed Dr. Satyanarayana and bombarded him with their fusillade of queries on their future career options.

The IIT Director focussed on the churning witnessed by the global employment market. He made a specific reference to the loss of jobs in areas that were once considered a symbol of prosperity and also the slew of opportunities arising in fields nearly written off. He appealed to the students to observe this changing scenario before choosing their career path.

The students made a beeline for the stalls set up by the various educational groups, interacted with the representatives and saw the infrastructure facilities, courses offered and their placement record.

SRM University was the platinum sponsor for the event, while Red FM and TV5 acted as media partners.
