The Chittoor police on Sunday initiated a ‘Dawn to Dusk’ special drive to identify and rescue insane persons, destitute and abandoned senior citizens in public places in all mandals of the district, covering Chittoor, Palamaner, Madanapalle and Puttur sub-divisions. About 500 personnel participated in the drive.

Superintendent of Police S.V. Rajasekhar Babu told the media here that as part of public-friendly administration, the special drive was launched. All the personnel were given guidelines and instructions to accomplish the task in cooperation with voluntary organisations and government rehabilitation institutions.

All the sub-inspectors along with station staff had hit the streets, railway stations and bus stations in their respective areas from early hours, searching for the target group. The mentally sick persons were treated with care and shifted to the area police stations. They were given a hair-cut, clean shave, bath and new clothes to wear. They were served with breakfast, lunch and snacks. As many as 104 mentally sick persons were identified all over the Chittoor police district, in addition to destitute women, children and the aged.

All the sick persons were admitted to the area hospitals and further steps would be initiated after their identification, he said.

Responding to the appeal of the SP, several voluntary organisations and public groups had brought food and clothes to the Charity Wall of the police wing at the district headquarters hospital, and to the various police stations for the rescued persons.
