Over 100 Congress MLAs join the chorus

Over 100 Congress legislators, including Ministers, have urged Congress president Sonia Gandhi to declare Rahul Gandhi as the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate ahead of the general elections.

Former AICC secretary and MLC P. Sudhakar Reddy took the initiative and impressed upon the State Congress leaders to append their signature on a letter, which he wrote to the party chief on Saturday. Mr. Reddy, in the letter, said that as the All India Congress Committee was holding its meeting on January 17, it would be in the fitness of things that Mr. Rahul Gandhi is announced as the Prime Ministerial candidate.

Cutting across regional lines, Ministers such as – Kanna Lakshminarayana, Kasu Venkatakrishna Reddy, Ponnala Lakshamaiah, R. Venkat Reddy and several MLAs, MLCs backed the demand.

They appreciated Mr. Gandhi’s focus on poverty eradication programmes, secularism and other developmental activities. They said he would be a successful leader and felt that if his candidature was announced in advance, it would be benefit the Congress to return to power for the third time.
