Several parties and organisations, including CPI (M), Human Rights Forum and Paryavarana Parirakshana Sangham, have opposed the setting up of Sumitomo thermal power project in Polaki mandal of the district . They extended solidarity to the agitating people saying they will not allow government to acquire agriculture land for the thermal project. Their support assumed significance as the government has almost finalised Polaki for the 4000 mw Japanese power project. The company requires around 2000 acres for the project.

HRF team led by V.S. Krishna and K.V. Jagannatha Rao on Friday interacted with people of Sanyasiraju peta, Chidivalasa, Chellaivalasa and sought their opinion over the establishment of thermal project in their vicinity. “Almost all of them opposed the project since they get two crops every year due to availability of Vamsadhara waters. The government should concentrate on clean energy such as wind power and solar power instead of establishing thermal plants in paddy fields,” said Mr. Krsihna.

CPI (M) State secretary P. Madhu, who visited villages of Polaki mandal recently, told the party cadre to participate in agitations being taken by people. Social activist Duvvada Jeeviteswara Rao said the government was promoting clean industries in capital region area while permitting polluting industries in backward district.
