One killed in local body poll violence

One person was killed and several others were injured during the first phase of polling in the MPTC and ZPTC elections held across the State on Sunday which were marred by clashes, attacks on policemen, police firing and irregularities in electoral rolls.

In spite of such incidents, the State Election Commission (SEC) put the average polling at about 80 per cent. The polling recorded in the last two elections was 72.26 p.c. in 2006 and 71.89 p.c. in 2001. State Election Commissioner P. Ramakant Reddy told newspersons that barring minor incidents the polling was by and large peaceful.

Re-polling on April 11

The SEC ordered re-polling in a few polling stations in Nellore, Medak and Anantapur districts. Fresh polling will be held on April 11 in all polling stations set up in connection with elections to Kovur-1 MPTC (Nellore) and polling station 34 of Udegolam village in Rayadurg mandal of Anantapur.

Re-polling was ordered in polling station 43 of Cherlagudem MPTC of Sangareddy mandal in Medak district following mix-up of ballot papers. In all, polling was held to 557 ZPTC and 8,250 MPTC seats on Sunday.

One Seetaiah was killed at Polenigudem of Chilukur mandal in Nalgonda district on Saturday night when four drunken Congress activists went to the village and started attacking people after they refused to heed to their request to vote in favour of the party.

The seriously injured Seetaiah succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment in a hospital. Two other youths also suffered fractures in the attack.

A Sub-Inspector of Police, Koti Reddy, was assaulted by an irate mob in the fishermen’s hamlet of Kothapalem in Nizampatnam of Guntur district when he tried to disperse two groups trying to provoke one another. He managed to steer himself away from the mob and fled on a motorcycle.

Commotion prevailed at Morampalli Banjara in Burgumpadu mandal of Khammam district after an SI opened fire in the air to disperse an unruly mob at a polling station. The incident occurred when a group of villagers entered into an argument with SI T. Suresh accusing him of manhandling the village sarpanch, B. Srinivas, without any provocation.

A group of TDP activists attacked a polling station at Ravipadu in Narsaraopet mandal in Guntur district alleging that bogus voting was taking place there. However, the police chased them after mild caning.

YSR Congress leader K. Narayana Reddy suffered serious head injuries in a poll-related attack at Veerabhadrapuram of Chapadu mandal in Kadapa district. A TDP polling agent, M. Gopal, was kidnapped at Thippireddipalle in the same mandal.
