A battery of senior municipal officials led by Minister for Municipal Administration P. Narayana swung into action and launched desilting of clogged drains in many parts of Old Guntur.

Following instructions from Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday morning, civic officials from Guntur and Vijayawada supervised the operation of desilting of all clogged drains in One Town. Mr. Naidu is believed to have given his piece of mind to officials.

On Friday, Jana Sena Party president Pawan Kalyan visited the affected areas and gave an ultimatum to the government to bring the situation under control.

Action plan

The outbreak of GE in Old Guntur in the first week of March has left over 12 persons dead. Though the number of cases reported in various private hospitals is declining, the GMC said it was not taking any chances.

Mr. Narayana told mediapersons that an action plan to desilt all major drains in the municipalities in the State had been prepared and funds under Amrut scheme would be utilised. He also said that all the corroded water pipelines in 110 municipalities in the State would be replaced by spending ₹2,700 crore.

“The existing water pipeline in Anandapet has been laid 40 years back and we have floated tenders to replace it,’’ said Mr. Narayana.

Over 500 personnel from the 12 municipalities in Guntur district were pressed into service from Friday to undertake emergency repair works.

Minister for Civil Supplies P. Pulla Rao said that eight people died due to GE-related complications.
