HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao has opposed organised cockfights using knives and indulging in betting in huge amounts.

There were traditions like cockfights in some parts of the State and ‘jallikattu’ (in Tamil Nadu). However, they need to be balanced with the orders given by courts and respecting law, he said in an interaction with reporters here on Friday in the backdrop of alleged attempts to organise cockfights in the city. A police picket has been set up at Arilova area to check any attempt at cockfights. Cockfights could be witnessed for fun with without using knives or betting, the Minister said.

On YSRCP leaders asserting that they would stop cockfights, he said they were free to do it. Police also should take action if there was information.
