‘Situation likely to worsen further in next few days’

Heat wave continues in Srikakulam district forcing the people to remain indoors during day time.

The temperature hovers around 34 degree Celsius during day time in the district. The situation is likely to be worst in the next few days, according to weathermen.

Recently, two persons, including a government officer, died of sunstroke in the district.

The State government has also confirmed the death and suggested the people to take adequate measures for their protection if they have to travel during day time.

Gudivada Appayya, a resident of Gulumuru village of Hiramandal died of sunstroke on March 26.

Assistant Engineer of Rural Water Supply scheme B. Nagabhushana Rao, 59, came to inspect the rural water schemes and water position in Vamsadhara area to assess the groundwater level.

He collapsed near Madapam sand reach area with the unprecedented summer heat and died on Thursday while being shifted to the government hospital in Narasannapeta. Srikakulam Collector P. Lakshmi Narasimham and Joint Collector Vivek Yadav suggested the officials to take adequate care while discharging their duties during day time.

They directed the District Water Management Authority to reschedule the timings of the workers who are involved in NREGA works.

Several workers died of sunstroke last year. Recently, a few farmers lost their lives while doing agriculture activities in the district. Mercury touched 36 degree Celsius in the district causing untold miseries to the students who are forced to return at 12.30 p.m. as the schools function for half-day. The private school managements suggested that the students would not face summer heat if classes are conducted till evening.
