No business could be transacted in the Assembly on the second day of the resumed budget session on Tuesday, in a repeat of the familiar pattern of protests and disruption of proceedings.
Speaker N. Manohar adjourned the House for the day as members of the TRS and the TDP stormed the podium, the former demanding a resolution on Telangana state and the latter seeking establishment of a steel plant at Bayyaram in Khammam district.
After trying in vain three times to run the business, the Speaker closed the session at 12.30 pm. Neither question hour nor the short discussion on SC/ST sub-plans could be taken up.
The Speaker announced that the reports of the standing committees on budgetary demands of departments were deemed to be tabled.
Earlier, Leader of the Opposition, N. Chandrababu Naidu (Telugu Desam) led a ‘dharna’ by party MLAs demanding that a steel plant be set up near Bayyaram iron ore mines in Khammam district and provide jobs for the local tribals. Mr. Naidu criticised the government for failing to keep up its promise and the TRS for taking up the issue belatedly.
