The police are yet to achieve a breakthrough in the acid attack case, as every angle they take is leading them to a blind lane.

Balaji Bhushan Patnaik, a paediatrician at a corporate hospital, suffered grievous injuries on his face when two unidentified persons threw concentrated acid on his face. The doctor suffered deep third degree burns on his face and neck. He was air-lifted to Mumbai on Saturday for specialised treatment at a corporate hospital. As per the latest reports, two persons on a motorbike signalled him to stop while he was returning home from duty. When he stopped and rolled down the window, one of them splashed acid and both sped away.

CCTV footage

The police were able to recover only one CCTV footage, but it was shot from a distance and the visuals are said to be grainy. The footage had been sent to the FSL lab in Hyderabad for investigation.

The police has taken up the case as a prestige issue and have deputed 10 teams to crack the case. “We are putting our best foot forward and working almost round the clock to crack the case,” said a senior officer investigating the case.

It is learnt that two DCP rank officers have been engaged in examining the call data record and social network sites of the doctor to get some clues.

While one ACP with a team of four SIs is scanning the CCTV footage of various areas, teams have been sent to Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Chatrapur, Eluru (where the doctor had worked for a few years) and a team has been posted at the hospital where he is working.

According to a senior police officer, such acid attacks are committed out of extreme animosity or in the case of factional enmity or extreme cases of sexual or professional jealousy.
