The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has served a notice on the Principal Secretary of Medical and Health seeking a comprehensive report on the death of a child owing to the alleged negligence of the staff of Kurnool General Hospital.

An agricultural labourer couple – Ramamaddi and Lakshmi Devi – of G. Singavaram village in Kurnool mandal moved the NHRC on the death of their eight-month-old daughter Anusha in March this year.

Got interchanged

They petitioned the human rights commission claiming that they had admitted Anusha in the paediatric ward in the Kurnool general hospital on February 20 this year as she suffered from cough and respiratory disorder.

When Anusha and another one-and-half-year-old boy Md. Ibrahim, who was admitted with vomiting and diarrhoea, were discharged on March 1, their discharge cards and prescription of medicines got interchanged due to the negligence of the staff.

The illiterate agricultural labourer couple were given medicines prescribed for vomiting and diarrhoea, instead of cough and respiratory disorder and they administered the medicines to the girl at home.

Re-admitted

Ramamaddi re-admitted Anusha in the Kurnool GH on March 7 when she suffered from diarrhoea and she died during treatment on March 11.

Alleging that his daughter died because she was given medicines prescribed for another boy, Ramamaddi moved the NHRC.
