Paving the way for the safest beach for citizens and tourists, work on the new beach at Lawson’s Bay will begin soon.
The first step towards creation of the new beach is diversion of the MVP storm water drain to Appu Ghar where a sewage treatment plant is located.
First phase
“The new beach coming up over five-and-a-half acres will be taken up at a total cost of Rs.13.34 crore. The entire cost will be borne by the Visakhapatnam Port Trust. The first phase of work will be diversion of the storm water drain coming from MVP Colony to Appu Ghar that will cost Rs.6 crore,” Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana told reporters here on Monday.
Tenders finalised
Tenders have been finalised for the work and work order given for the diversion of the 650 m drain. Another major work to be taken up is beautification of the nearby burial ground.
The entire project is scheduled for completion in two years.
As a part of the development of the beach, landscaping, walking and jogging track, beach furniture, ornamental lighting and public amenities will be taken up.
Mr. Satyanarayana said the new beach will take pressure off the Ramakrishna beach which was always crowded and also help prevent deaths by drowning as Lawson’s Bay was considered the safest beach.
The road abutting the beach will be integrated as a part of the Rs.50 crore, Centrally-sponsored beach corridor to be developed from Coastal Corridor from Visakhapatnam to Bhimunipatnam, Additional Commissioner (Projects) B. Nagendra Kumar said. GVMC has also been allotted to take up work of beach beautification between Coastal Battery and NTR statue.
Some development and amenities will be provided at Sagarnagar spending Rs. 5 lakh to Rs.10 lakh to help residents and tourists relax.
