The two-member Central Committee to finalise site for new Petroleum University in East Godavari district has arrived on Saturday and inspected places in Rajahmundry and Kakinada. The committee was entrusted to locate site for constructing permanent and also temporary buildings to run classes from next academic year, starting from July 2015.

Speaking to media persons after the visit, Prof. G.J. Gupta, Director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology in Uttar Pradesh and advisor S.P. Mathur said that the government can run classes from next July-August in the temporary buildings.

However several things are to be taken care of while establishing the university. Hiring of faculty, infrastructure and equipment along with enrolment of students are the important things to be considered, Prof. Gupta said.

He said that modalities like number of branches to be introduced and mode of joining students through entrance examinations were the other important issues.

When asked about finances, Prof. Gupta said that he was told that Central Government was funding the new University as per the AP Reorganization Bill and 500 acres was more than enough to construct permanent structures.

Though the committee visited several places, it was learnt that to run classes from next academic year, the same GIET campus was suitable and 700 to 1,000 acres of forest land adjacent to the GIET which can be de-notified can be used for permanent structures.

The team first inspected ITI building near JNTU, Kakinada in the morning and also 57 acres of site near Chollangi village. The committee, along with Joint Collector R. Mutyala Raju, Rajahmundry Sub-Collector Vijayaramaraju, reached GIET Engineering College campus, which was given shelter to Dehradun Petroleum University in the recent past.

The CEO of GIET D.L.N. Raju explained the team about the facilities available to run temporary classes in their college and when it came to Government Arts College, Prof. Mastanaiah, Principal of the College has shown the Nannaya University PG Block, owned by their college.
